Floor Care & Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will help keep your new flooring looking beautiful and performing as intended for years to come.
Important: Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions for your product. If the manufacturer's instructions differ from this guide, the manufacturer's instructions control. Damage caused by improper care is not covered by the Contractor's warranty and may void the manufacturer's warranty.
Luxury Vinyl (LVP / LVT) & Sheet Vinyl
✓ Do
- Sweep, dust mop or vacuum (hard-floor setting).
- Damp mop with a pH-neutral vinyl cleaner.
- Wipe up spills right away.
- Use felt pads and non-staining mats.
✗ Do Not
- Do not use steam mops or steam cleaners.
- Do not use wax, polish or "mop & shine."
- Do not use ammonia, bleach, vinegar, oil soaps or abrasives.
- Do not use rubber- or latex-backed mats (they stain vinyl).
- Do not leave standing water on the floor.
- Do not drag furniture.
Laminate
✓ Do
- Sweep, dust mop or vacuum (hard-floor setting).
- Clean with a barely damp mop and laminate cleaner.
- Wipe up spills immediately.
- Use felt pads under furniture.
✗ Do Not
- Do not use steam mops or steam cleaners.
- Do not wet mop or leave standing water (it swells the boards).
- Do not use wax, polish, oil soaps, vinegar or ammonia.
- Do not drag furniture.
Hardwood (Solid & Engineered)
✓ Do
- Sweep, dust mop or vacuum (hard-floor setting).
- Use a manufacturer-approved wood cleaner on a microfiber pad.
- Wipe up spills immediately; use felt pads.
- Keep indoor humidity steady (about 35-55%).
✗ Do Not
- Do not use steam mops or steam cleaners.
- Do not wet mop or leave standing water.
- Do not use vinegar, ammonia, bleach or all-purpose cleaners.
- Do not use oil soaps, wax or furniture polish.
- Do not use abrasive pads.
- Do not drag furniture.
Tile (Ceramic & Porcelain)
✓ Do
- Sweep and mop with a pH-neutral tile cleaner.
- Clean grout with a soft brush; reseal grout as recommended.
- Wait 72 hours after install before wet-cleaning grout.
✗ Do Not
- Do not use acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, rust removers) on grout.
- Do not use bleach on colored grout, or oil-based cleaners/wax.
- Do not use steel wool or wire brushes.
Natural Stone (Marble, Travertine, Granite, Slate)
✓ Do
- Dust mop or vacuum regularly.
- Clean with a cleaner labeled safe for natural stone.
- Blot spills immediately; reseal as recommended.
✗ Do Not
- Do not use steam mops or steam cleaners.
- Do not use vinegar, lemon or any acidic cleaner (it etches stone).
- Do not use ammonia, bleach, tub/tile cleaners or abrasives.
Carpet
✓ Do
- Vacuum at least weekly.
- Blot spills with a white cloth, working from the outside in.
- Use only cleaners labeled safe for carpet.
- Have carpet professionally hot-water extracted every 12-18 months and KEEP RECEIPTS (warranties may require proof).
- Clip snags level with scissors.
✗ Do Not
- Do not rub or scrub stains.
- Do not use bleach or household cleaners not made for carpet.
- Do not over-wet carpet.
- Do not walk on damp carpet until it is fully dry.
- Do not pull snags or loose loops.
- Do not use a vacuum's beater bar (spinning brush roll) on wool, loop/Berber, shag or other delicate carpets; it can fray, fuzz, pull or shred fibers. Turn the brush off or use suction only.
Area Rugs
✓ Do
- Vacuum regularly (avoid the fringe).
- Blot spills; rotate rugs every 6 months.
- Use a non-staining rug pad.
- Have wool, silk and hand-made rugs professionally cleaned.
✗ Do Not
- Do not soak rugs or use steam/shampoo machines on wool, silk or hand-made rugs.
- Do not use rubber-backed pads on vinyl or hardwood.
- Do not rub or scrub stains.
Trim, Casings & Wall Base
✓ Do
- Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap; dry after.
✗ Do Not
- Do not soak with water.
- Do not use solvents or abrasives.
Important Warranty Information
Using a steam mop or steam cleaner, or any product or method listed above under "Do Not" or prohibited by the manufacturer, may damage your flooring, is not covered by the Contractor's workmanship warranty, and may void the manufacturer's warranty.
Remember: Always refer to the manufacturer's care instructions for your specific flooring product. If those instructions differ from this guide, the manufacturer's instructions control.
